Peony Magic | Artwork Process | Acrylic Painting Holistic Process

All roads have led me here… I initially had a spark of an idea to lay down swaths of acrylic with a palette knife into a blank canvas. In my favourite sky blue, intense rose madder pink and white.

I wanted to use this abstract background as a foundation to create free style, abstract, loose florals. What actually emerged were some sensual bursting peonies with intricate yet loose details.

That little idea turned into more studies of different flowers that I thought might look interesting against the same background.

Then, in this painting, I got brave and merged them all together in this stunning beauty. My confidence with navigating the colours in this background, paired with stencil shapes, highlights using bubble wrap and glorious high-energy paint splatters, has improved the more I persisted with this technique and style. I got braver and bolder. The same is true for the floral details.

Painting these pink, blue and yellow beauties felt east and like a beautiful floral meditation. Layers of acrylic brush strokes are built up but not overpainted to create contrasting yet complementary flowers against this purple haze background. Winding stems and buds intertwining with each other in a playful, magical dance.
