Using simple pencil drawings to get out of your head and into your heart
creativity & well-being Nov 18, 2024Unleashing Your Inner Creativity with Just a Pencil and Paper
Today, I want to write about something that’s been on my heart lately — the power of keeping things simple when getting creative. If you’ve been feeling a bit disconnected from your creative side or unsure where to even begin, this one’s for you.
Let’s be honest, life can be complicated. As women, we often have a tendency to overthink, especially when it comes to our creative projects. We get caught up in the details: “What materials should I use? What if it’s not perfect? Will anyone like it?” Sound familiar? These inner dialogues can stop us from even starting, turning something that should be fun and fulfilling into a stressful experience.
But here’s a little secret: You don’t need fancy tools, an art degree, or a perfect plan to tap into your creativity. All you need is a basic HB pencil and a piece of paper. That’s it!
Why Simple is Powerful
Creativity doesn’t have to be about making a masterpiece or producing something worthy of an art gallery. At its core, creativity is a tool for self-discovery and expression. It’s about allowing yourself to play, explore, and connect with your inner world without judgment. When we strip away the complexity, we give ourselves permission to simply be.
By using just a pencil and paper, you’re taking away all the excuses and barriers. It’s a low-stakes, high-reward way to explore your inner thoughts and feelings. The beauty of this practice is that it’s incredibly accessible — you can do it anywhere, anytime.
Getting Out of Your Head and Into Your Heart
One of the easiest ways to shift from overthinking to feeling is by engaging in simple, intuitive drawing. The goal isn’t to draw something realistic or perfect; it’s to let your pencil move freely and express whatever needs to come out.
Here are 5 Simple Pencil Drawing Exercises you can try today to reconnect with your inner self:
-
Mindful Freeform Doodling
Grab your pencil, set a timer for 5-10 minutes, and just let your hand move across the paper. Don’t lift your pencil off the page. Allow yourself to draw shapes, lines, and patterns without overthinking. This exercise helps you let go of control and judgment, freeing your mind and making space for your emotions to surface. -
Nature-Inspired Drawing
Think of a natural element that resonates with you — a tree, a flower, the ocean. Sketch it while focusing on how it makes you feel. This exercise connects you with the grounding, calming energy of nature, even if you’re not physically outdoors. -
Gratitude Drawing
Reflect on something you’re grateful for, whether it’s a warm cup of coffee, your favourite cozy blanket, or a loved one’s smile. Draw that object with the intention of honouring its place in your life. This practice shifts your focus to the positive, nurturing your mind and spirit. -
Breath and Line Drawing
This one combines mindfulness and creativity. Take a deep breath in and, as you exhale, let your pencil draw a line. Inhale again and draw another line in a different direction. Continue this pattern, allowing your breath to guide the movement. This exercise is wonderful for synchronizing your mind, body, and emotions. -
Self-Portrait with a Twist
Draw a self-portrait, but instead of focusing on your physical appearance, capture how you feel on the inside. Use symbols, shapes, and patterns to express your emotions. This is a powerful exercise for self-reflection, encouraging you to explore your inner landscape rather than how you think you “should” appear.
The Magic of Letting Go
I know it can be intimidating to start something new, especially if you’re worried about the end result. But remember, the goal here is not to create something “good” — it’s to create something honest. These exercises are about giving yourself the freedom to explore, to make mistakes, and to discover something new about yourself in the process.
There’s something so liberating about putting pencil to paper and just letting go. As your hand moves, your thoughts quiet down, and you might even notice feelings you didn’t realise were there. This is your chance to tune into your intuition and let your inner voice guide you.
Embrace Your Creative Journey
So, if you’ve been feeling disconnected, overwhelmed, or just need a little soul-nourishing self-care, I encourage you to try one (or all) of these exercises. What have you got to lose? It might just be the creative spark you need to bring more peace, joy, and clarity into your life.
And hey, I’d love to hear about your experiences! Share your drawings, your thoughts, or any insights you gained. Let’s celebrate this journey of creative exploration together.
Thank you for being here, for being brave, and for allowing yourself to explore the creative, soulful woman that you are.
With love and a pencil in hand,
Sam 💛
