Creative Sweet Spot: The Higher Ground Between Art Mastery and Art Therapy

creativity & well-being podcast summaries spiritual transformation Jun 16, 2025

So often in creative circles, we are told we must choose. We must either pursue art as a professional, striving for mastery, skill and consistency, or we lean entirely into the process, creating for self-expression and healing with no attachment to outcome.

But what if there was a powerful space in between?

A place where we honour the deep, soulful process of creating and also embrace growth, challenge and skill development. I call this space the Creative Sweet Spot. And I believe it is one of the most empowering ways we can engage with our creativity.

Podcast Summary

Why this sweet spot matters

At one end of the spectrum, we find the professional artist path — where the focus is on building mastery, refining style, producing high quality work, and often, growing a business around your art.

At the other end, we find the beautiful space of art therapy principles — a practice where there is no pressure, no goals and no critique. The art is created purely for the process itself — for healing, for emotional release, and for personal connection.

Both are valid, meaningful paths. But what if we can draw from both at the same time? What if we can create a practice that honours soulful process and stretches us towards new creative edges?

Two creative practices

During a conversation with artist Maggie Parr, we explored this very idea. Maggie spoke about having two distinct creative practices — one for healing, and one for creating art to sell.

This inspired me to reflect on my own practice and how this applies to the women I coach.

In my world, the Creative Sweet Spot honours the process of creating as a path of healing, empowerment and transformation — while also inviting us to grow, to take creative risks, and to develop skills that serve our soul’s voice more fully.

In practical terms, this may look like having two separate practices:

  • One for professional work where you uphold the quality and standards needed for your audience and collectors.

  • One purely for you — a safe space for self-discovery, healing and nurturing through creativity.

For example, I have a sketchbook practice that leans heavily into play, experimentation, and the joy of the process. There’s no outcome required.

I also have my professional art practice — a longer, more layered process where I take my time and allow each piece to unfold in its own rhythm.

Both practices feed my soul in different ways.

Why finding your own balance is key

For those who are not professional artists but are creatively curious, this sweet spot gives permission to approach creativity with both care and courage.

Skill development can be a beautiful part of the journey — taking creative risks or setting goals does not have to contradict the healing power of the process itself.

But leaning too far towards perfectionism risks disconnecting from the intuitive essence of creativity — it can become about proving rather than expressing. On the flip side, staying only in process-based art can sometimes limit our growth and potential.

The Creative Sweet Spot is about honouring both.

It is about process and progress.
It is about self-expression and skill.
It is about soul connection and creative courage.

This is where we come alive through creativity — not because we’ve mastered a medium, but because we are expressing our inner voice more clearly with each brushstroke, word or mark on the page.

Honouring creative seasons

And remember — just like life, your creative practice will move in seasons.

Sometimes your soul will crave the gentleness and surrender of pure process-based creating. At other times, you will feel a pull towards growth, skill-building and expanding your creative edges.

Neither season is better than the other. Both are essential.

The sweet spot allows you to honour where you are, while staying open to what is next.

A reflection for you

If this resonates, I invite you to reflect:

What would it look like for me to embrace both the healing process and the creative challenge? Where might I be holding myself back from one or the other?

You don’t have to choose. There is beauty and power in the space where both meet.

Take care,
